GoDaddy Auctions introduces new domain extensions

GoDaddy Auctions, GoDaddy’s industry-leading auction venue, has been busy behind the scenes.

Alongside building a new beta version of its platform, the GoDaddy Auctions team has been working to onboard expired inventory for a batch of new domain extensions.

The onboarding of new top-level domains (TLDs) or domain extensions, something that last happened a decade ago, means that GoDaddy Auctions customers will have access to a wider range of expired domain names, including .xyz, .vip, and .io.

GoDaddy will be working with our expired domain partners to add more of this new inventory over time. As we onboard more domains to the expired auctions, you will see both the number of TLDs for sale and the number of second-level domains (SLDs) expand greatly during 2023.

GoDaddy Auctions welcomes .xyz

Since GoDaddy last onboarded new domain extensions, the domaining landscape has changed drastically. While .com remains dominant in the aftermarket, swathes of domain name investors have dedicated a larger percentage of their portfolios to alternative TLDs, driven by wider end-user adoption of .io, .xyz, and more.

The .xyz extension is particularly significant considering its popularity among Web3 businesses as well as established parent brands such as Alphabet and Block. The adoption of .xyz by a wider portion of end users means that for some domain name investors, the acquisition of .xyz domain names now plays a central part of their strategy.

This is backed up by data recently shared by Afternic, which shows that .xyz was the 5th most popular TLD in 2022, ranked by the volume of domain names sold.

Beginning today, May 9, you will be able to purchase expired .xyz domain names, with 37 other TLDs following soon.

To find expiring .xyz domain names, visit GoDaddy Auctions and click on “Advanced Search.” Set the extension to “.xyz” and type to “expiring auctions.” Once you search, you’ll be presented with a stream of expiring .xyz domain names.

Renewal Fee Indication

The addition of expired inventory from this batch of new domain extensions meant overcoming some practical hurdles on-site, including the implementation of varying renewal fees.

Unlike .com, new domain extensions can have varying registration and renewal tiers or fees that are set by the registry. To help customers understand the varying renewal fees associated with expiring auctions, GoDaddy Auctions now clearly displays the renewal fees involved with a domain name purchase before you finalize your bid.
